Sky Lab and Sky Dome viewing will begin around 8:00 (weather permitting) and will include Venus, Winter Constellations and various Deep Sky Objects.

The Avalon Observatories house several permanently mounted telescopes and are used in conjunction with educational programs here at Avalon. These include observing and imaging a variety of celestial objects and events including sunspots and solar flares.

Our monthly programs have included the use of a portable planetarium in all weather conditions, and have featured a variety of portable telescopes on clear nights. The permanent Avalon Observatory enclosures allow us to make telescopes available on a moment’s notice and help us provide more frequent viewing opportunities. Stay tuned for even more frequent events!

AVALON MINDFULNESS

Beginning Mindfulness Meditation

A good way to begin, or strengthen, your home practice, these foundational classes review the essential elements of mindfulness meditation and provide beginning practice instruction. The two classes below are a sequence to be taken together.

Deepening Your Practice Classes (DYP)

Single classes intended for those with some prior meditation experience.

Classes are often themed and include a brief talk on a selected aspect of mindfulness to encourage a deeper exploration of the practice.  Guided practices include:  sitting meditation, walking meditation, body scan, mindful yoga, mindful self- compassion (MSC), loving-kindness, yoga nidra, and mindful inquiry.

Half-day Silent Retreat

For those with prior meditation experience, this half-day of intensive guided practice is held in the context of silence.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Course (MBSR)

Known as the “Gold-Standard” for learning mindfulness meditation for stress reduction and wellness, MBSR is a  9-week 27.5 hour training developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts’s Medical Center in 1979. It has been featured in countless media segments, hundreds of research studies and is now offered all over the world in hospitals, schools, business and sports.  And here at Avalon for the past 10 years!

Intended for those who are motivated to be more active in their own well-being and health, this program provides intensive, supportive experiential training to guide you in that direction.

Four Harbors Audubon Society

Hosts regular bird walks in Avalon Preserve on the second Saturday of every month at 8am in front of the Grist Mill (November – March meet at 9am).

The walks should last about one and a half to two hours. The places to be visited will depend on the season and will include all areas of the Avalon Preserve, the East Farm Preserve, the Stony Brook Estuary and Harbor. Join us and see some of our beautiful native and migratory birds as they feed, breed, and vacation in our beautiful Avalon Preserve.
